Steve's "Casting for a Cure"
Kids Fishing Rodeo

The 10th Annual Steve McCadams “Casting For A Cure” Kids Fishing Rodeo returns to Carroll Lake on Saturday, June 6th for a fun filled morning where even little fish bring on big smiles.

Young anglers ages 15 and under are invited to participate in the FREE event which will benefit the American Cancer Society. Each year McCadams teams up with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the big event continues to grow in popularity each year.

More than 3,000 kids from five states have been introduced to the great sport of fishing since the rodeo’s conception.

“I’m looking forward to another big rodeo and we’ve got more prizes than ever to offer the kids this year,” said Steve McCadams, nationally known outdoorsman who lends his name to the event. “Thanks to the help of a TWRA, lots of volunteers and donations, the festivity will build some self-esteem in these future fishermen as they fight fish and cancer at the same time.”

Advanced registration is advised. Entry forms are available at Carroll Lake bait shop or send each kid’s name, address and age to: TWRA, Attn: Steve McCadams “Casting For A Cure” Kids Fishing Rodeo, 200 Lowell Thomas Dr., Jackson, TN 38301.

Participants are asked to arrive early and check-in at the registration tent where each contestant will receive a bag of goodies. Onsite registration will be from 7-9 a.m. with the actual competition taking place from 9-11 a.m.

Youngsters can obtain bait and tackle onsite at Carroll Lake bait shop. However, TWRA will have loaner rods so every kid will have a chance to fish.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn about the great sport of fishing while sharing some time with their family and friends,” said McCadams, himself a cancer survivor. “I wanted to do something to help fight this terrible disease that affects so many people for no reason. It’s especially sad to see young kids stricken with cancer but with events like these we can give them hope as we work together to find a cure.”

The event will coincide with National Fishing Week across America. And, June 6 is Free Fishing Day in Tennessee.

Carroll Lake is located one mile east of McKenzie, TN and five miles west of Huntingdon, on U.S. Highway 22. For additional information log on to www.stevemccadams.com or call 731-642-0360.

RODEO ANGLERS HAVE FUN IN THE SUN…FISH AND KIDS TEAM UP AGAINST CANCER

From the placid waters of Carroll Lake came good times and fond memories for some 250 young anglers last Saturday at the 8th Annual Steve McCadams “Casting For A Cure” Kids Fishing Rodeo.

The annual event helps introduce kids to the great sport of fishing while fighting cancer at the same time. In fact, for a lot of youngsters it’s where they catch their very first fish.

Beneath the shade of towering oaks and beech trees were armies of small boys and girls battling hungry bluegill, catfish, bass, and crappie. Armed with small rods and reels or cane poles, the future fishermen tested the water for fish of any sizes. To them it didn’t matter. Every fish brought a smile.

Baits of choice ranged from crickets to red worms with an occasional youngster tossing a minnow or chicken liver in hopes of landing a hefty catfish. The army of anglers were divided into four age groups as the free event was open to kids age 15 and below.

“Thanks to great weather, the help of donors, TWRA, and other volunteers we had another good event with kids here from four states,” said event spokesman Steve McCadams, himself a cancer survivor. “Everything went smooth and the kids caught a lot of fish. Those big smiles from the youngsters hoisting up a little bluegill on the stringer remind me of why we do this each year.”

“I grew up fishing here some 45 years ago and fished some of the same spots under the same trees these kids are fishing today. If these creek banks could talk they’d tell a lot of stories,” continued McCadams.

This is National Fishing Week across America and each year McCadams teams up with TWRA to host the free event at Carroll Lake. This year the long distance prizes were awarded to two young anglers who ventured to the rodeo from Florida and Colorado.

Special recognition was given to the young angler catching the most fish and biggest fish in four age brackets.

In the 5 and under category it was a three way tie for the most fish with Shelby Tucker amd Bobbie Traywick of McKenzie, Sarah Jackson of Colorado Springs, CO.,  sharing the top spot.  All three young ladies will receive a bicycle and plaque. Big fish went to Madison Shell of McKenzie who also received a plaque and bicycle.

In the 6-8 year age bracket it was Austin McCabe of Buchanan who landed the most fish while Hunter Smith of McKenzie chalked up the big fish.

IN the 10-12 year age bracket it was Jimmy Camper of Puryear who caught the most fish while Kortney Mallard of Wildersville landed the big fish.

In the 13-15 year age bracket it was Dillon Cox of Humboldt with the most fish and Jimmy Johnson of Paris catching the big fish.

A lot of door prizes were handed out ranging from tackle boxes and rod and reel combos to water pistols, bait boxes, flashlights, and more. McDonald’s donated free ice cream sundae coupons to every angler in the rodeo as well.

This year’s event will make a donation to the American Cancer Society of just over $3,000 after the rodeo expenses; thanks to area donors who helped the kids fight fish and cancer at the same time.

A tip of the hat to all those who helped make this day in the sun a good one for the future fishermen.

The American Cancer Society is proud to partner with Steve McCadams for the 7th annual “Casting For A Cure” Kids Fishing Rodeo.  With your help and support of events such as this, we can indeed find a cure for cancer.  This event will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006 at Carroll Lake (located five miles from McKenzie, TN on US Hwy 22 South).
